I’m back! After 3 incredible (and exhausting) weeks and not having a home-cooked meal, I’m ready to get back into the kitchen.
Here’s what I got to try out:
October is Sydney’s Crave Food Festival which includes a Night Noodle Market. Vendors from around town offer tasty samples.
I have never tried Malaysian food and I fell in love with it during my trip. The Roti Canai from Mamak had a spicy and flavourful sauce and the flatbread was light with tons of layers. The food was quite spicy for me, but it was too good to stop eating. If we had a restaurant that was similar, my spice tolerance would sky rocket and I would be one happy lady.

Din Tai Fung is known for their dumplings in Sydney. I was fond of their shrimp and pork dumplings, but overall I was a bit disappointed. The crab dumplings cost $18 and you get 6 very small (2 bites) dumplings.
We did try the “exotic” meat while we were down there. In Uluru, we tried kangaroo and crocodile. Even R who doesn’t eat mammals ate kangaroo. The reason? Australia has a large population of kangaroos, about 40 million. The population is so big that they use kangaroo meat to make dog food. There’s even a term called kangatarianism to describe people who don’t eat meat except for kangaroo. Kangaroo tastes like a lean beef and crocodile tastes…chewy and tough. At one of the restaurants, you can grill your own meat which is where we tried crocodile and I don’t think we cooked it properly. I guess cooking crocodile is best left for the professionals.
Our drink of choice in Australia? Bundaberg ginger beer. I wish I could bring back cases of this, it’s better than any ginger beer I’ve had here.
In Melbourne I had a steady diet of macarons from La Belle Miette.
